December 2017 – We spent two days here during our Pride of America cruise, and it turned out to be one of my favorite islands. We rented a compact car but got a free upgrade to a mustang convertible. We used the Gypsy Guide app and on its recommendation stopped at the glass beach on our way west. The beach was interesting, and we found several pieces of nice sea glass.
Next, we headed to the Waimea Canyon. We had beautiful weather and stopped at all the main lookouts and several pullouts. Every stop had gorgeous views. The colors of the canyon are amazing! Toward the end of the road, we had a few clouds/rain move in, but that just made it more interesting.
We stopped at Poipu Beach Park on the way back but did not see any monk seals. We did get some shave ice here and then headed back to the ship for the night.
The next morning, we headed north and then west to the end of the road. We stopped at some waterfalls and other sightseeing points. We stopped in several of the towns and picked up Christmas presents for family. We also stopped at the Kilauea Lighthouse and enjoyed seeing all the birds in the area. It was definitely a worthwhile stop while in the area. In Princeville, we stopped at a shopping center and found some local wine to try that night. We also picked up a couple of fruit smoothies up the road for the drive back. Traffic picked up tremendously as we got closer to the airport, and we ended up running short on time getting back. This was a beautiful island to visit, though, and I definitely plan to come back someday!
